Honoring Tel Aviv: Editing Photos in the name of art

Ron Shoshani's photo art captures Israel in a beautiful light:

Yesterday's news was focused on photo editing. A national conversation on the ethics of doctoring photos was kicked off when a Brooklyn-based Hasidic Yiddish language newspaper used Photoshop to airbrush out two prominent women -- Hillary Clinton and Audrey Tomason -- from an iconic photo released by the White House. More than a rant on the extremes to which the ultra-Orthodox will go to keep photos of women from the pages of their newspapers, what I find most interesting is the question of when it is appropriate to alter a photograph.

But rather than presenting all the instances when one might alter a photograph and arguing that there are times when it's acceptable to touch up a photo without misrepresenting the historical record, I thought that in honor of Israel Independence day I would focus...

Ronsho Perfect Tel Aviv Storm

Ronsho Perfect Tel Aviv Storm

Photographer Ron Shoshani loves Tel Aviv and wants to show his city in its best light. You might think that a blustery weekend such as this presents a challenge but in fact, Shoshani finds that storm clouds suit his textured hyper realism.

When we first profiled Shoshani, also known as Ronsho, back in 2010, he had just embarked on what has become a long-term project: recreating Tel Aviv’s image for the international audience.

As he recently recounted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Israeli MFA), “Nowadays every self-respecting city is interested in tourism and has a portfolio of photos showing its potential and the beauty of its landscapes. Tel Aviv has as much to offer as those other cities, I’m absolutely sure…

"I realized that my city deserves such a portfolio, deserves it as a modern developing city, endlessly interesting for tourists. A city of...

Jerusalem In Snow

Jerusalem In Snow

in a world that is obsessed with non stop votes and discussions about the 7 wonders of the world, such as the great wall of China, Stonehenge, Taj Mahal, the pyramids of Giza, the Colosseum in Rome, Machu Picchu, etc – there are many who feel that these places are worn out. The whole ‘wonders’ subject feels terribly overused.

we’ve seen and continue to see an overflow of photos from these places and somehow a feeling is sneaked that people are tired to hear and see it again and again. It feels that these are no wonders anymore. Not sure if people still feel excitement about these touristic destinations.

meanwhile, and the other side of the globe – this month in Israel, a snow storm covered Jerusalem with a snow blanket. The scene that was exposed at that early morning was something that no one can ever forget. It was a fairy tales scene, a jaw dropping performance by nature, a hypnotizing and close to lucid dreaming experience.

The secret of his popularity is that Ron Shoshani does what no one did before him.

Ron grew up in a family where a lot of attention was paid to design. This contributed to the development of his interest in photography, especially in the tourist genre.

At some point Ron noticed that there is a big difference between the way cities like New York, London and San Francisco are presented in glossy international magazines and the images representing Tel Aviv.

"Nowadays every self-respecting city is interested in tourism and has a portfolio of photos showing its potential and the beauty of its landscapes. Tel Aviv has as much to offer as those other cities, I'm absolutely sure.
