This adult purple gallinule was wading in a marshy area of Lakeland, Florida. Purple gallinules are colorful striking water birds with iridescent blue, green and purple feathers; bright yellow legs; a pale blue frontal shield; and a conical yellow and red bill.

I believe this is a female cow bird. The cow bird got its name years ago when it would follow the bison herds across the Great Plains and feed on the insects flushed up from the grass. It is considered a parasite bird because it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds and lets the host bird raise its young.
